Everyone Can Lend a Hand! Although membership is a great benefit to our PTA, you need not be a member to attend meetings. And you do not need to be a member or attend meetings to Help Out! We need volunteers for many of our programs. Both "day of" help with events like Hoover Hustle, High Interest Day, and Reading Carnival, and ongoing planning and support for those and many other programs. Donations of money, goods, or services can also help. Making treats for bake sales, donating toys/prizes for Reading Carnival, or contributing goods/services for the Silent Auction are needed. Monetary contributions directly to the PTA are also welcome.
The Added Values of Membership (An open letter to Hoover Families)
Hello Hoover Families!
My name is Bree Aguilera. I would like to take a moment to share my story and hope that it will be informative as well. Last year, my only child Avianna began 4K at Hoover. As many of you can attest, I was inundated with forms, fees and deadlines for the school year. One of the forms I came across was for PTA membership. I knew what the acronym stood for, but my parents were never involved in PTA. I had no idea what the group did.
When I saw the PTA membership fee, I thought, “Hey, that’s not so bad.” There are three levels and it’s only a one-time fee. Being a member also comes with perks and discounts throughout the school year, so my husband and I decided on the Premiere level, thus becoming PTA members.
I wrote the meeting dates on my calendar (once a month) and attended my first one, with no expectations. Well let me tell you, from that point on, I was hooked. There is a board of four members who run the meetings and they do an amazing job. All teachers and parents who join the PTA are welcome. Mr. Hatab made every effort to attend meetings and give updates. There is even free childcare. For an hour, we get to openly discuss what is going on in the school and in the district. We get to make decisions and provide our input. Every decision is put to a vote. It’s a really good opportunity to have your voice heard. I felt really cued in and learned a ton.
So, meetings aren’t your thing? There are still many opportunities to help throughout the school year. The PTA helps organize and run numerous activities. Just a few of these include: the welcome back picnic, the Hoover Hustle, school dances, bakes sales, ice cream socials, book fairs, Market Day, spaghetti dinner, reading carnival, and high interest day. The PTA also helps recognize the teachers; this includes classroom gifts, the holiday tree and food for them during special events. The PTA appreciates any time parents are willing to give, even if it’s once throughout the school year.
If you don’t have time to volunteer, we all understand. However, keep in mind that the membership fees help to fund many of the school activities that your child(ren) will be a part of during the year. Contributing with a PTA membership will better fund the program to provide the best activities possible for your child(ren). It is a great way to participate. Therefore, if you are unable to attend or volunteer, your presence will still be felt and appreciated.
Please consider becoming a member this year. If you have more than one child who attends Hoover, there is still only one flat fee. I am so happy that I decided to turn that paper in last year. I know Avianna will continue to benefit from the PTA and she enjoys seeing her parents around the school. I feel like I have a good idea of what goes on in her school life as well, and it feels really good to help and be part of a team. Please contact me if you have any questions.
